Server down all day yesterday

Server was down all day yesterday, which sucks because the previous day's income was well over $240 USD.

I didn't change anything on the server, and my server provider didn't know why the sites would just stop loading.  All sites show up with "The page cannot be displayed", and cpanel is non-existant.

I assume it was cpanel's auto-update feature, which is supposed to update the cpanel software to the latest stable release.  This was set this way because a friend of mine suggested to do this.  Obviuosly this was not a good idea, especially considering the compatibility issues my FreeBSD server is having with cpanel/whm software.   Personally I say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" (except for security updates).

Here's how I got it to work:

  • updated apache manually
  • turned off auto-updates in cpanel, except for security updates
  • had a problem with mysql not functioning at all
  • In whm I chose upgrade to mysql 5.0 (db's already backed up from a couple days ago)Ran update server software (scripts/mysqldump) Ran build apache (buildapache/easyapache)
  • Ran manually /scripts/perlinstaller --force Bundle::DBD::mysql
  • had some help from Justin at Awknet manually configuring mysql, not sure exactly what he did (not to self, $$ tip Justin at bill time)
  • restarted server (graceful reboot)

Things started working, albeit exceedingly slow.  I was baffled for a bit then realized that my apache maxclient setting was set at 1000 (up from the default value of 150) and this was running smoothly.  Since I updated apache software I doublechecked and sure enough, it was set back to 150.  Changed the value to 1000 and everything is running smooth. Pages load in a snap. *what a relief*
